Sell Items You Don't Use or Need

Today's bit of frugal knowledge is our Thrifty Thursday advice. If you have some things you really don't use or need, consider selling them for instant profit! Use those funds to pay down existing debt and build your credit!

Now, if you're like me, some things have sentimental value. But there will come a time when you will have to consider downsizing. Holding onto too many things for "sentimental value" eventually turns into hoarding. And I'm sure most of you have seen at least one episode of that show.

Donate It

If you have just WAY too much stuff, and are looking to get rid of it quickly, we might suggest donating it to a local thrift store. You've cleaned your closets, organized the cupboards, and rounded up the stuff you don't use anymore, or wear for that matter. You've decided it's time to part with it, rather than try & sell it. Thrift Stores like Goodwill, Saver's, or The Salvation Army are great options if you choose to donate. Your local communities may also have small thrift stores available.

Sell It

Ok, so you've gone through your stuff and realized the value you have yet. Your stuff is in really good condition and too nice to just give it away. Your clothing may be barely worn or even have tags on it yet. Your children have hardly touched that new toy they got for their birthday - two years ago. Those new pots & pans in your cupboard have hardly been touched & are taking up space in the back corner. Let's go ahead and sell them to recoup some of those wasted purchases. There are several online sources for selling your "good stuff." We've highlighted them here:

ThredUp is a resale platform for women's and kids apparel, transforming closets and giving new life to used clothes. As an online consignment and thrift store, you can buy and sell high-quality secondhand clothes. Find your favorite brands at up to 90% off.

Poshmark is a leading social marketplace for new and secondhand style for women, men, kids, pets, home, and more. Poshmark is where users can buy and sell clothes, home goods, and electronics via app.

Facebook Marketplace is a destination on Facebook where people can discover, buy and sell items. People can browse listings, search for items for sale in their area or find products available for shipping.

OfferUp instantly connects with local buyers and sellers! Buy and sell everything from cars and trucks, electronics, furniture, and more.

Cut Your Losses

In the end, you've come to realize that downsizing and decluttering is probably a good idea. I mean, you can't take it with you when you're gone, and you certainly don't need to leave all that "stuff" to your kids to go through when your time is up. You might as well sell it now and get top dollar for it. Pay off some of your debt. If you're fortunate enough to be debt free, consider padding your bank account and save it for a rainy day. Or, put it into your children's college fund. Whatever you choose to do, rest assured that the clutter is gone and your pocketbook is a little heavier.
