For our weekly money saving tip from creditsoup.com, we present Thrifty Thursday. Today we focus on shopping habits. Why waste money on full price, brand name items that maybe get a few uses out of? Buying generic products or finding things on clearance are sometimes just as good as purchasing the same name brand thing at full price.
Clothing Shopping
If you're like me, the clearance rack is probably your favorite place in department store. There's just something special about getting a great deal on a brand new outfit. Take for instance Kohl's. They're known for having HUGE sales and their Kohls Cash makes it even better. Most times, for every $50 you spend, you'll get $10 back to use the following week. However, if you have a Kohls store card, you get even more of a percentage off of your purchase.
For example, you shop only clearance rack items, which are already heavily discounted because they have to move merch to prep for the next season. 20 items at full price may come to around $400. On the clearance rack, they're marked 70-80% off. Once you get to the checkout, you present your $100 worth of Kohl's Cash, and then pay with your Kohl's charge card. Final total rings up around $70. Thus, you just paid approximately $3.50/pc - or less for brand new items of clothing. Cha-ching!
Grocery Savings
Next up is grocery shopping. Here's a fun activity to try the next time you go grocery shopping. Look a little harder at the shelf price. You will more than likely see a price per oz listed on there. Compare the price per oz of your name brand item to the generic store brand. Shocking isn't it?
In some circumstances that name-brand item that you usually pay more for, is actually available in a larger quantity and for cheaper when you opt for the generic. Keep this in mind when filling up your cart with name brand items. You could be saving hundreds of dollars by shopping the generic counterpart.
