The average electricity rate is the USA is currently at 15.46 cents per kilowatt-hour. With the average rate of 2-6 kilowatt-hours of electricity used to dry a load of laundry, it can range from 30.92 to 92.76 cents per drying load. On the high end, if you average four loads of laundry per week for a year, you’re looking at $192.94 a year in savings.

An article from Whirlpool states that electric clothes dryers use anywhere from 1800 to 5000 watts of energy, on average, dependent on the load and cycle configurations. This equates to about 1.8 to 5 kWh of electricity. Whirlpool dryers typically require 2100 watts of energy.

Not only is line-drying your laundry good for the pocketbook, it's also better on the environment by using up less energy! Plus, your clothes smell amazing after a day in the sunshine.

• Dingy whites? Hang them in the sunlight!
• Time crunch? In some cases, the wind and temps are just right and it's actually quicker to hang them out than wait an hour for the dryer to shut off.
• Less amount of dust in your house. Yes, dryers have a lint trap. However, there will always be a little more that escapes and causes you to have to dust more. Hanging things outside to dry means less time spent on that tedious task of dusting.
